My Story
Starting a new business is a big decision so here's a little more about my story and how and why it all began.
Before starting Story Stars classes, I was a primary school teacher in Bristol for many years. I had always wanted to be a teacher and really enjoyed it. I absolutely loved working with children and the teaching part of the role was so much fun but I found the enormous amount of paperwork and ever-growing workload a lot! It took over my evenings and weekends and I found I had little time for anything else.
After my husband and I adopted our first baby in 2016, my priorities completely changed! I wanted to spend as much time as possible with my little family and knew I wouldn’t be able to (and didn’t want to!) put all those hours into a teaching role anymore. I wanted a change of life style and a much better work-life balance. We couldn’t afford for me to be a stay-at-home mum so I looked at how I could use my skillset for something new.
Whilst on maternity leave, I really enjoyed taking our son to baby classes. I loved that special time together, trying something new (messy play was the favourite!) and meeting other parents. I had taken our son to a range of different baby classes and spotted something missing...books! I loved reading myself and my son adored stories. I had heard so much about the importance of reading books, talking about pictures, sharing stories, and singing rhymes and songs to help a baby’s development and had been doing this since the day our son came to us so where were these classes? Where were the classes promoting books and a love for reading?
Running my own business has given me the freedom to work around my family, giving me the work-life balance I have always wanted, all whilst doing something I love. That's where it all started! I used my teaching knowledge, understanding of child development and experience of being a mum to create a new baby class. I wanted to ensure it was fun and engaging, introduced little ones to the magic of books and provided them with lots of new experiences. The combination of immersive storytelling and themed sensory and messy play was a hit! My business took off immediately and has grown from strength to strength. I absolutely love my job! I get to spend my mornings with gorgeous families, making babies smile and bringing amazing books to life! All of this plus having the work life balance I had always hoped for. Dream come true!
